Composting in East Quad, South Quad and Bursley
- Walk compostable items to the bins at the waste closets in each hall.
- Insects, microbes, and odor are all a part of composting. Keep lids closed to minimize pests and odors in the residence halls.
Composting in Munger Graduate Residences and Northwood
- Request a compost bucket from the Community Center.
- Put your compostables in the bucket.
- Empty your bucket into the large bin located in every parking lot.

What is Compostable and What is Not?
Compostable items include fruit and vegetables, cooked and raw food scraps including meat and bones, coffee grounds, tea bags (staple is okay) napkins, small paper scraps, all cups, napkins, plates and cutlery from any M Dining cafe.
Non-compostable items include candy, gum, liquids, food packaging, coffee cups and lids that don't say "compostable", paper plates, plastic utensils, styrofoam, tissues, plastic, aluminum, and glass.
Other important points
- If something is marked biodegradable it does not mean that it is compostable. When in doubt, throw it out.
- Many paper cups, especially those used for hot liquids, have a thin-plastic lining and are also not compostable.
- Compostable plastics are not recyclable. If you do not have access to compost, these items should go in the trash.
