FAQ - Returning Resident Housing 2026
Q: Will every student who registers for Returning Resident Housing receive on-campus housing for the 2026-2027 year?
At this time, we do not know the chances that a returning student will have to receive 2026-2027 on-campus housing. This year, we have around 2,400 spaces available for returning students. With the opening of Wolverine Village, Michigan Housing is able to offer more space to returning students than previous years.
You should consider the possibility that we will not have space for you based on the number of students who register. After the registration process is complete, Michigan Housing will share information about the number of students who registered for the process.
Q: Will Wolverine Village be available for returning students?
Yes! While the majority of Wolverine Village residents will be new first-year students, next fall we hope to have around 350 returning students living in Wolverine Village. Semi-suites, shared by four residents, will be available for returning students to select during Room Selection.
Q: Which areas of campus will be available for returning students?
Of the 2,400 spaces available to returning students, Michigan Housing anticipates that about 50% will be available on Central Campus (including Wolverine Village) and 50% will be available on North Campus. North Campus spaces will include both Bursley Hall and Baits II.
Rooms available during Room Selection include:
-
Single and Double Occupancy
- Doubles will be primarily available in Bursley Hall and Baits II.
- Wolverine Village and North Quad will have double rooms within suites.
- Singles available in Betsy Barbour, North Quad, Bursley Hall, and Baits II.
-
Triple Occupancy
- Triples will be available in Fletcher Hall.
- North Quad will have triple rooms within 5-person suites.
Q: What are the February 3 Room Selection timeslots and how are they determined?
If you successfully register for Returning Resident Housing by Friday, January 23rd at 11:59 pm EST, and will participate in the February 3 Room Selection Day, Michigan Housing will send you your timeslot on January 29.
The timeslot is the start time that you will have access to search for and select a space. You will not have access before that timeslot start time. You will have until 11:59 pm EST on February 3 to select a space, regardless of when your timeslot began.
Timeslots are determined randomly. If you form a roommate group with other students, you and your roommate group members will receive the same timeslot.
Q: When I select my space on February 3, is there further action I need to take to secure on-campus housing?
Yes! If you are able to select a space on February 3, later that week we will send you a housing contract for the space you selected. After we send you the contract on Friday, February 6, you will have until Tuesday, February 10 at 11:59 pm EST to submit the contract.
Contracts not submitted by the deadline will be canceled.
Q: Why can't I select a room during the Returning Resident Housing room selection?
Possible reasons:
- A Returning Resident Housing registration was not submitted. Please note the deadline to apply is Friday, January 23rd, 2026 at 11:59 pm EST.
- If you are in the system as a roommate group, rooms will show for your size group only. You will have to exit the group in order to search for rooms as an individual.
- If you are in the system as an individual (not part of a group), all rooms may have been selected. We will send an email when this occurs. See other questions below, such as "There are no rooms available at my time of selection. What should I do?" for advised next steps.
Q: How do I create a roommate group?
During the Returning Resident Housing registration process, you may either search for a roommate in the Michigan Housing portal, or you may already know your desired roommate before entering the registration process.
Once you identify who you wish to live with, you will take the following steps during the Returning Resident Housing registration process:
- Designate one person as the leader of your roommate group.
- The leader should select "Create Group" and set the Group Name and Group Password. Leader: don't share your group's name with anyone other than desired roommates!
- The leader shares the group name and password with desired roommates. If you've been shared your group's name and password, select "Join Group with Name and Password" and enter the name and password to request to join the group.
- The leader of the group will be notified via email that a request has been submitted. Leader: you'll see those requests under "Incoming Requests" and be sure to accept those one-by-one until everyone is in the roommate group.
- Once everyone is in the group, you are all set!
Students have the ability to choose from available rooms that match the size of their roommate group. You will be required to fill the room.
- 4-person roommate groups can choose from quads. 3-person roommate groups can choose from triples. 2-person roommate groups can choose from doubles.
- If you do not find a room that meets your group preferences, you will need to leave or delete the roommate group in order to individually choose bed spaces in a room from among available non-roommate group spaces.
- Residential College (RC) students who are required to live in the program for their second year, will see only RC spaces. If your roommate group has members who are not part of the program, you will not be able to choose a space in your program
- Honors Program students may choose from program spaces or general spaces. Please note, if your roommate group has members who are not in the program, you cannot choose a room in your program.
Q: Why can’t I select a room with my preferred roommate?
Possible reasons:
- You are eligible for the space but your roommate is not (ex. Michigan Learning Community/Theme program participants and non-MLC/Theme program participants are not eligible to choose each other as roommates, as the program participant is assigned to program space).
- The room is designated for a specific gender identity and one roommate does not match that identity in the system.
- There are not any rooms remaining that match the size of your roommate group. If this occurs, try leaving the roommate group and continue searching.
Q: I cannot find any rooms close to my place of worship
- The Room Selection process allows students to see what is available. We are not able to offer other rooms at this time.
Q: I cannot find any rooms that meet my medical needs.
- As the Returning Resident Housing process is oriented around Room Selection, the expectation is that you are aware of your needs and should select a space that meets those needs. Please be aware this may mean selecting a space that does not meet all of your needs. Should you require additional accommodations assistance, please contact hsg-accommodations@umich.edu.
Q: I am participating in a Michigan Learning Community (MLC) or Theme Community, will I select my own space?
- Returning Residential College and Honors students will participate in Room Selection. They will receive time slot information on Jan. 29 and participate in the February 3 Room Selection Day.
- All other returning students participating in an MLC or Theme Community will not participate in the February 3 Room Selection. Contracts for returning students participating in an MLC or Theme Community will be sent on January 27.
- Each MLC or Theme Community has their own process for selecting participants and determining the method of placement. Some programs will select the spaces on behalf of participants. Other programs will have Michigan Housing assign them using information provided by the program or in your Returning Resident Housing registration form.
Q: If I am in an MLC or Theme Community, can I live with a roommate who is not part of that community?
- Unfortunately no. Spaces within these communities are reserved for those who have applied and been admitted into these programs.
Q: How can I plan for 2026-2027 rates?
- Room rates are reviewed and approved by the Board of Regents on an annual basis, typically in late June. Please see information here regarding the current Undergraduate Room and Board Rates.
Q: There are no rooms available at my time of selection. What should I do?
- Please begin looking off-campus for housing, if you have not begun doing so already.
- Beyond The Diag is a university resource to begin your off-campus housing search.
